Neutrals masterclass for Winters

When Winters are given their colour palette, they usually heave a sigh of relief at being allowed to 'keep' Black and White, so everybody knows those neutrals belong firmly in this coolest and deepest of palettes, but it might surprise you to learn how numerous, and how versatile, the neutrals of Winter are.

As well as Black and White, Winter encompasses deepest Navy and Charcoal, mid range neutrals like Mole and Dolphin Grey, and lightest Ice Blue and Silver Moon alongside White. (Side note: Many Winters use their other ice colours as alternative neutrals to White, so feel free to switch those for White as your preference dictates!).

Each season has neutrals from the warmest and coolest ends of their palette but don't feel you have to choose from one end or the other - sometimes a combination can be more unexpected and interesting. And remember, these neutrals are your foundations - you want to pick ones which harmonise comfortably with your Wow colours - your favourite bright colours within the palette.

If you're just starting out with your personal colour palette, it can sometimes be helpful to stick to a smaller number of neutrals, to ensure a cohesive look within your wardrobe as you transition it over to your new colours - pick one darker and one lighter as a minimum, and you can add more over time. This is particularly true when considering shades like Mole, which can be tricky to combine with other Winter neutrals in a small wardrobe.

In order to show you how versatile neutrals can be, I've styled Winter's neutrals three ways below; all alone, with a bolder colour pop or two, and as the foundation of a much brighter outfit.

Millie Check Skirt | Long Sleeve Faux Wrap |  Chloe Jacket | Classic  Metallic Belt

Style notes: Rather than opt for white, I've used a combination of Pebble Grey and Silver Moon/Silver as the light neutral in this outfit, and it still provides enough contrast with striking Navy, especially with the Metallic Belt adding extra shine.

Cotton Bella Trousers | Ruched Halterneck | Shawl Wrap | Suede Tassel Bag

Style notes: I love how the Sapphire Suede Tassel bag elevates this very classic red, black and white outfit without making it feel over-the-top colourful. A bold scarf or belt could serve the same purpose, and switching the Black wrap for Silver would give a summer-ready look.

Style notes: The White Short Cascade keeps this look feeling intentional and anchored. It also, and this can be valuable to Winters who struggle to style their deeper shades for spring/summer, really lifts and freshens the vibrant Winter colours and giving them a tropical, holiday feel, rather than that intense jewel feeling which always feels so appropriate for autumn/winter.
