Neutrals masterclass for Autumns

Autumn can sometimes feel like the season with the fewest neutrals, due to its lack of true Navy, Charcoal or Black. But actually this sophisticated palette abounds with less obvious neutrals, which can be mixed and matched for everything from the most classic of looks to the thoroughly contemporary.

From effortlessly elegant Camel, Chocolate and Cream at the warmer end of the palette, the softer and cooler Stone Grey, Soft White and Mole, or darkest Marine Navy and Sultry Navy, pulling together a stylish look is simple once you figure out your favourite neutrals.

Each season has neutrals from the warmest and coolest ends of their palette but don't feel you have to choose from one end or the other - sometimes a combination can be more unexpected and interesting. And remember, these neutrals are your foundations - you want to pick ones which harmonise comfortably with your Wow colours - your favourite bright colours within the palette.

If you’re just starting out with your personal colour palette, it can sometimes be helpful to stick to a smaller number of neutrals, to ensure a cohesive look within your wardrobe as you transition it over to your new colours – pick one darker and one lighter as a minimum, and you can add more over time.

In order to show you how versatile neutrals can be, I’ve styled Autumn’s neutrals three ways below; all alone, with a bolder colour pop or two, and as the foundation of a much brighter outfit.

Jersey Maxi Skirt | Serena 3/4 Sleeve Top | Rachel Jacket | Cashmere Gauze Stole | Gold Halo Necklace

Style notes: Although Autumns generally look good in more tonal looks, I've added a touch of light/dark contrast here to add interest to this very minimal, neutral look. Dark Olive might not feel like an obvious neutral, but looks incredibly elegant with your browns and tans, and harmonises with so many brights from your palette.

Ruched Skirt | Mid Cascade Long Sleeve |  Cara V Neck | Leather Tassel Bag |  Florence Infinity Scarf

Style notes: Vibrant Lime and Red Coral are made infinitely more effortless and laid back with the addition of softly elegant Pebble Grey and Mole. I love how the softer Autumn neutrals add a minimalist, tasteful foundation to any brights, without making them feel dreary and sensible.

Style notes: Even in the midst of this riot of colour, light neutrals in the Mid Cascade and both print backgrounds keep this look anchored but also incredibly fresh and vibrant.
