How to start wearing colour

Wearing colour has the power to make you feel like the very best version of you. But here at Kettlewell we know that it can be more than a little overwhelming working out where to begin with adding colour to your wardrobe and your life.

We have one very simple rule for getting started with colour: begin with a colour pop! But before we show you exactly how, step one in your colour journey is to learn which palette of colours belongs to you.

The colour spectrum can be divided into four palettes - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter - which encompass every single colour, from light to deep, warm to cool and soft to clear. You also belong to one of these palettes, depending on your own unique combination of skintone, hair and eye colour. We've used our collective decades of experience to put together our unique Colour Quiz, which will link you to your perfect palette.

If you haven't already done so, we highly recommend taking the quiz to get you started. While it is only step one on your colour journey, it will give you an indication of your seasonal palette and help you explore the sometimes overwhelming world of colour!

Right, back to those colour pops. How do they work for your palette?

Spring

Style notes: Scarves are perhaps the simplest colour pop, bringing a splash of one of your very best colours right up to your face. Whether it's a Cashmere Gauze Stole or a Florence Infinity, pair a light bright colour pop from your palette with a simply neutral outfit for instant colour confidence. Springs love contrast, so style your pop with either a light or dark neutral (or both!). We've opted for Soft White, Spring's version of White, and Soft Grey, an airy light grey shade which provides the perfect neutral backdrop for any bright Spring scarf.

Summer

Style notes: Colour pops needn't only come in the form of scarves! For this Summer combination we've kept to a neutral denim-blue inspired backdrop of Storm Blue Pauline Trousers and French Grey Everyday Scoop, allowing the fresh Lilac Pink of our luxurious Lambswool Coatigan to do all the talking. Summers are generally best in tonal, harmonious looks, so we've stuck to a simple palette of blue-grey tones for the backdrop to this colour pop, and also avoided too much light/dark contrast.

Autumn

Style Notes: Autumn is a warm toned palette, so honey and caramel shades abound in our chosen neutrals of Oatmeal, Cocoa and Camel. But don't worry if you don't have the perfect neutrals in your wardrobe just yet - adding a colour pop of Poppy to any simple neutral outfit of Charcoal, Navy or even Black will add a splash of one of your very best colours close to your face, making you look amazing and giving you the confidence to keep embracing colour and exploring your newfound palette.

Winter

Style notes: We're all comfortable with White and Navy, right? As a Winter your new job is to find a way to add a bold colour pop to these classic crisp, neutral shades. We've opted for rich Royal Grape in the form of our silky soft and elegant Jude Wrap for this outfit - soon you'll pairing two or three jewel bright Winter shades together confidently, but remembering the 'dark neutral, light neutral, colour pop' rule is a brilliant place to start for your newfound Winter palette.

I have lost my House of Colour advisor but because she introduced me to Kettlewell Colours it’s easy as I know I am a deep blue autumn
